OK, now before you all come together with a resounding chorus of “Avocado Free Guacamole? What the heck”, and think about revoking my foodie card, let me explain.

Why would I ever take one of the best dips of all time and switch it up?

Well, for those that don’t know, a little over a year ago I developed an allergy to avocados. Like a, get my butt to the ER because I can’t breathe allergy!

I know, it is OK to shed a tear, I still quietly cry about it often. Although Kevin would consider it more whining than crying, I have been found hovering over my beloved avocados in the produce department, gently caressing them with visions of tacos, tostadas, and burritos dancing through my head.

So, when I got the opportunity to partner up with Cascadian Farm Organics, and tasted all of their amazing tasting frozen veggies and fruits, I was immediately drawn to my next favorite veg….asparagus.

YUM right?

Of course right!

Now, this is where the imagination came into play. How could I take this lovely veggie, and transport it into my long lost love?

Well, I will tell you how, you take some of those tender bites of asparagus, pair it with a small amount of lovely, sweet, green peas, some onion, jalapeno, garlic, Greek yogurt, and spices, and TADA you have one amazing dip full of all of the great flavors your have come to expect from good ol’ guacamole!
Still skeptical?
Well, Kevin aka Mr Doubtful, gave me the “look” when I told him what I was making. Even as I was shoveling chip fulls of it into my face, the look was still there. Then…..he took a bite…….Haha I saw the light go on and his face transformed from a frown to a very shocked smile as he went back in for another bite.
Yay me!! *happy blogger dance*
Now, let me tell you the nice little surprises that come along with eating asparagus.
  1. Asparagus is a very good source of fiber, folate, vitamins A, C, E and K, as well as chromium, a trace mineral that enhances the ability of insulin to transport glucose from the bloodstream into cells.
  2. Asparagus can help fight cancer, along with avocado, kale and Brussels sprouts, and is a particularly rich source of glutathione, a detoxifying compound that helps break down carcinogens and other harmful compounds like free radicals. This is why eating asparagus may help protect against and fight certain forms of cancer, such as bone, breast, colon, larynx and lung cancers.
  3. Asparagus is packed with antioxidants: It’s one of the top ranked fruits and vegetables for its ability to neutralize cell-damaging free radicals.
  4. Another anti-aging property of this delicious spring veggie is that it may help our brains fight cognitive decline. Asparagus delivers folate, which works with vitamin B12—found in fish, poultry, meat and dairy—to help prevent cognitive impairment.

I know flavor is the most important thing, but finding out that you are being all healthy and stuff without really trying is always a big plus for me!

Now can I take a hot second and gush about something else that makes me uber happy?
Cascadian Farm has announced that they will be working with the Xerces Society to plant thousands of acres of pollinator habitat at their supplier farms by the end of 2020!
THAT makes this planet conscious, little wannabe homesteader, food blogger a happy happy girl!
When I have watched the bee population in my area dwindle to close to nothing, and have had to actually hand pollinate some of my veggies to get them to produce, the news of a company I love sharing my concern, and actually doing something to rectify the issue, well it makes me even more happy to support them, and everything they do!
Check out the entire article here.
OK, back to the food right?
I have been a busy girl subbing this wonderful new combination in many of my favorite dishes like Chicken Enchiladas with Avocado Cream SauceSalmon with Avocado Salsa, and Avocado Hummus AKA Guacammus
But mainly I have been piling it mile high on all of my favorite Mexican dishes with a huge smile on my face!

P.s. why don’t you go out and grab some Cascadian Farm Organic asparagus and peas, and make this for your Cinco de Mayo celebration? Sit back, and see if anyone can tell the difference. I think you will be happily surprised, just like I was!

  1. I haven't had guacamole is SO LONG due to avocado insensitivity. This dip is music to my ears. I can't wait to try it!

  2. Yay!! I am so glad! Nobody believed me that it would taste good, but they had to eat their words hehe

  3. Avo free?! I don't know if I can be convinced…perhaps I need to try it out 😉

  4. It must be hars to be alergic to avocado! Yet I believe this recipe is awesome! I will try this recipe with grilled asparagus one day!

  5. What a great idea!! My cousin is actually allergic to avocado and always wants guac at parties. I'll have to tell her about this recipe!

  6. Thank you for this! I too have had several severe reactions to avocado! I keep walking by them in the market thinking maybe I should try them again but always talk myself out of it. Who wants to plan a day to be sick.

  7. I hope you do Sophia 🙂 I think you will be pleasantly surprised!

  8. Oh it is soooo hard, but atleast now I can enjoy one of my favorite dips!! I think it would be amazing with grilled asparagus too.

  9. Thanks Anjali! Oh yes, if she misses guacamole as much as I did she will love this!!

  10. Haha I know what you mean Beth. My boyfriend has to direct me away from the avocados quite often, but after two ambulance trips I had to come up with a way to enjoy guacamole safely 🙂

  11. What an awesome recipe! I love that it's such a great option for avocado haters or people with allergies.

  12. I was in Mexico recently at a health and wellness spa and they used peas in the guacamole to cut down the fat a bit. Love this idea!

  13. I wondered how many people shared my allergy, and am amazed by the numbers! I am so glad that this recipe can help them (just like me) enjoy an old fave again!!

  14. Thanks Liz! Yes, I read a few recipes that subbed peas 🙂 I had to add my second fave veggie, asparagus. I think cooked asparagus kind of mimics that creamy texture you get from avocado.

  15. I think this is a great idea. There's so many people who are sensitive nowadays so this is a great workaround. Non-dippers can now dip. You rock.

  16. Thanks Kim! We had the kids over for a carne asada feed last night, and this was what we had in place of the traditional guac, they both were very happy with it. I think my son was a bit miffed at the Greek yogurt in place of sour cream, but the guac they loved hehe

  17. While I'm a huge fan of the real stuff, this is a great alternative! My mom can't eat avocados any more either (not an allergy just really bad heartbun and stomach issues or something) and she's always left out of the dip party. Loving this veggie packed option instead!

  18. Yes, I feel for anyone that has to suffer through a guac free party 🙂 Now she can enjoy along with!

  19. Im allergic to asparagus too! What else does anyone think I could use? I was thinking pistachio paste??

  20. Dang, I am not sure. Possibly green beans? I just haven't tried any other veggies. Sorry!

  21. can you use canned asparagus and canned peas?

  22. I have not done so myself but I would say yes. I just always have frozen veggies here 🙂
