This recipe kinda makes me laugh. Not because it is funny really, but it brings back memories of my childhood and Salisbury Steak TV Dinners.

    Aaahhhhh right?

But seriously, when I was a kid I actually loved them. They were one of my favorite TV dinners, and believe me we ate a LOT of TV dinners!

But this kinda left me accustomed to "meat" that really wasn't meat if you know what I mean.

    What is that stuff anyway??

Many years later, after I was grown, married, and had kids of my own I got the bright idea to pick up some Salisbury Steak TV dinners.

Hey, we were living on a military salary, and they were on sale.

I just remembered that I had loved them so much I figured this was a huge win.

This Simple Salisbury Steak recipe turns that classic TV dinner into something you can be proud to serve your family from www.bobbiskozykitchen.com

    Then I made them.

Ummm how in the heck did I ever love these things?! Ewwwww

I don't even think the kids finished their meal, and the rest of the dinners promptly ended up in the trash.

I was never tempted to buy them again!

Fast forward many years, after I had my cancer surgery and I was trying to feed the family healthier food.

I found so many recipes for Salisbury Steak in cookbooks, and on the internet.

I gave several of them a try. Some were bland, others were full of a ton of ingredients.

The one I kinda stuck to for quite a while was by Rachael Ray. I would make the traditional mushroom gravy though unless Mini Me was eating. She might be nicknamed Mini Me, but she did not inherit my love of mushrooms.

What is wrong with that child?

This Simple Salisbury Steak recipe turns that classic TV dinner into something you can be proud to serve your family from www.bobbiskozykitchen.com

Then she moved out and wanted me to come up with recipes that were simple to make, and easy on her budget.

She became quite proficient with my meatloaf, spaghetti with meat sauce, and creamy green chile chicken enchilada recipes.

Then she asked me for an easier Salisbury Steak recipe. So I put my mind to trying to simplify, without losing flavor and this is what I came up with.

Now it has become one of her favorite recipes and is actually requested as one of the recipes I make for her and Kevin's lunches.

Oh, just a note, if you make this to pack for lunches only cook the steaks for half of the time it calls for in the gravy. They will finish cooking when they are heated up.

Simple Salisbury Steaks with Caramelized Onion Gravy

This Simple Salisbury Steak recipe turns that classic TV dinner into something you can be proud to serve your family
prep time: 10 MINScook time: 21 MINStotal time: 31 mins

    INGREDIENTS:

    • 1 1/2 pounds Certified Angus Beef® brand ground beef
    • 1/3 cup bread crumbs
    • 1 large egg, lightly beaten
    • 2 tablespoons Ketchup
    • 1 tablespoon Dijon Mustard
    • 1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce
    • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
    • 1 teaspoon onion powder
    • Kosher salt
    • Fresh cracked black pepper
    • 2 tablespoons olive oil
    • 1 large onion, diced
    • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
    • 2 cans beef consomme
    • 1/2 teaspoon ground thyme
    • Garnish with chopped parsley

    INSTRUCTIONS

    1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, bread crumbs, egg, ketchup, mustard, Worcestershire Sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix well and shape the meat mixture into four oval patties.
    2. Heat a large skillet over medium heat for about a minute, then add the olive oil. Place the meat patties in the skillet and cook them for about 3 to 4 minutes on each side, or until they’re well-browned. Remove the patties from the skillet, cover with foil, and set them aside.
    3. Add the chopped onions to the skillet and reduce the heat to medium-low. Cook the onions, stirring occasionally, until they are translucent and caramelized, about 20 minutes. Sprinkle the flour over the onions, and whisk for a minute or two. Gradually stir in the beef consomme and thyme and raise the heat back to medium.
    4. Add the patties back to the skillet. Bring to a simmer, cover and cook the for 10 to 15 more minutes, or until they reach an internal temperature of 145 for medium-rare or 160 for medium.
    5. Taste the gravy and adjust seasoning if needed.
    6. Garnish with chopped parsley and serve topped with gravy.

This recipe looks delicious. I tried Salisbury Steak when I was young and didnt like it (it was probably a tv dinner). This looks like something my family and I would enjoy.

You know, I used to love those Salisbury Steak TV dinners too, but you're right - I bet it would taste pretty disgusting to my grown up palate! This looks so yummy, I totally want to try it, and am going to pin it on my Healthy Eating Pinterest board, too! 🙂

I typically am not a fan of Salisbury steak. However, the caramelized onion gravy sounds absolutely amazing! Salisbury steak TV dinners are absolutely disgusting.

If you are game to give the gravy a try, and I hope you are, you could have these over buttered noodles, rice, or even quinoa 🙂

This dish looks stunning! It sounds even better with caramelized onion gravy! I have never tried Salisbury steak before as it is not so popular in my country. Actually this is the first time I heard the name of this dish, and I cannot wait to make this steak to my family at this weekend. Hope to hear their comments about this dish! Thanks a lot for your recipe 🙂

The steak looks mouth watering. From time to time I would grill a steak or two on my BBQ grill. Now that I found this saucy recipe, I would love to try it as I like to have sauces on my dishes.
