Embarrassingly simple to make, these pickled wonders are a game-changer. No culinary wizardry needed; just slice, boil, jar, and ta-da! Now, I'm on a pickling spree, eyeing beets, Pico de Gallo, Marinara Sauce, and a top-secret veggie soup recipe (stay tuned).

    🥘Spicy Red Pickled Onions Ingredients

These are the ingredients necessary to make Spicy Red Pickled Onions.

All of the ingredients needed to make spicy pickled red onions.
    • Red Onions - red onions are the best for this recipe but you could use yellow or white as well.
    • Rice Vinegar - I prefer rice vinegar but you could use white wine vinegar if that is what you have on hand.
    • Besti Monk Fruit and Allulose Sweetener - this is my preferred keto sweetener for everything.

A detailed list with measurements and instructions can be found on the printable recipe card at the bottom of the page.

Helpful Hint: 💡: Elevate the flavor by customizing your pickled red onions! Try adding a handful of fresh herbs like thyme or oregano for a unique twist. Personalize your jar to suit your taste buds.

    Substitutions

    • Red Onions - I prefer the flavor and the gorgeous color that red onions provide but you can use yellow or even white onions if you prefer them.
    • Rice Vinegar - I pickle a lot of vegetables with rice vinegar but you can use white wine vinegar if that is what you have on hand.
    • Sweetener - I only use Besti sweetener in my recipes so I cannot vouch for any others but if you choose to use another please taste and adjust as you go.

    📖Variations

    • Citrus Zest Twist: Add a burst of citrus by incorporating the zest of an orange or lime into the pickling liquid. The bright, zesty notes will complement the spiciness beautifully.
    • Herb-Infused Delight: Experiment with fresh herbs like rosemary, thyme, or dill for an aromatic infusion. A handful of fresh herbs adds an extra layer of complexity to the pickled onions.
    • Smoky Sensation: Introduce a smoky element by incorporating a teaspoon of smoked paprika into the pickling liquid. This variation adds depth and richness to the flavor profile.
    • Sweet Heat Fusion: For a sweet and spicy kick, mix in a tablespoon of sugar-free fruity preserves or a splash of keto-friendly hot sauce. This dynamic duo will tantalize the taste buds.
    • Pickled Veggie Medley: Expand your pickling horizons by adding thinly sliced veggies like bell peppers, carrots, or cucumbers to the jar alongside the red onions. A colorful and crunchy medley awaits!

    🍽Equipment

This is the equipment you will need to make Spicy Red Pickled Onions.

    • pint mason jars
    • measuring cups and spoons
    • chef's knife
    • small saucepot

    Storage

    1. Cool & Seal: After allowing the pickled red onions to reach room temperature, seal the jar tightly with a lid.
    2. Refrigeration: Store the sealed jar in the refrigerator to maintain freshness and flavor.
    3. Duration: These spicy pickled red onions will keep well in the refrigerator for up to two weeks. Beyond that timeframe, the texture and flavor might be affected.
    4. Check Before Enjoying: Before each use, check for any signs of spoilage such as an off smell or changes in color. If the onions appear or smell unusual, it's best to discard them.

    💭Top tip

Achieve the perfect crunch by ensuring the liquid completely covers the sliced onions. This not only enhances the texture but also ensures a more consistent flavor throughout. Don't be shy – press those onions down to let the pickling magic happen evenly!
