Substitutions
- Red Onions - I prefer the flavor and the gorgeous color that red onions provide but you can use yellow or even white onions if you prefer them.
- Rice Vinegar - I pickle a lot of vegetables with rice vinegar but you can use white wine vinegar if that is what you have on hand.
- Sweetener - I only use Besti sweetener in my recipes so I cannot vouch for any others but if you choose to use another please taste and adjust as you go.
📖Variations
- Citrus Zest Twist: Add a burst of citrus by incorporating the zest of an orange or lime into the pickling liquid. The bright, zesty notes will complement the spiciness beautifully.
- Herb-Infused Delight: Experiment with fresh herbs like rosemary, thyme, or dill for an aromatic infusion. A handful of fresh herbs adds an extra layer of complexity to the pickled onions.
- Smoky Sensation: Introduce a smoky element by incorporating a teaspoon of smoked paprika into the pickling liquid. This variation adds depth and richness to the flavor profile.
- Sweet Heat Fusion: For a sweet and spicy kick, mix in a tablespoon of sugar-free fruity preserves or a splash of keto-friendly hot sauce. This dynamic duo will tantalize the taste buds.
- Pickled Veggie Medley: Expand your pickling horizons by adding thinly sliced veggies like bell peppers, carrots, or cucumbers to the jar alongside the red onions. A colorful and crunchy medley awaits!
🍽Equipment
This is the equipment you will need to make Spicy Red Pickled Onions.
Storage
- Cool & Seal: After allowing the pickled red onions to reach room temperature, seal the jar tightly with a lid.
- Refrigeration: Store the sealed jar in the refrigerator to maintain freshness and flavor.
- Duration: These spicy pickled red onions will keep well in the refrigerator for up to two weeks. Beyond that timeframe, the texture and flavor might be affected.
- Check Before Enjoying: Before each use, check for any signs of spoilage such as an off smell or changes in color. If the onions appear or smell unusual, it's best to discard them.
💭Top tip
Achieve the perfect crunch by ensuring the liquid completely covers the sliced onions. This not only enhances the texture but also ensures a more consistent flavor throughout. Don't be shy – press those onions down to let the pickling magic happen evenly!
