The holiday season may have come and gone, but that doesn’t mean we can’t keep the festive spirit alive all year long! Whether you're planning a New Year’s party, a football game, or a cozy get-together, these Keto Blinis with Smoked Salmon Pâté are the perfect appetizer to serve. I’ve always loved entertaining, but as the years have gone by, I’ve come to appreciate small gatherings where great food and good company take center stage.
If you’ve ever thought that keto appetizers can’t be fancy or fun, think again! These low-carb blinis are the perfect example of how delicious and elegant keto-friendly dishes can be. Light, fluffy, and gluten-free, these little blinis provide the perfect base for the savory richness of smoked salmon pâté.
I first discovered these keto blinis on The Keto Diet App while brainstorming new ways to serve one of Kevin’s favorite dishes—smoked salmon dip. We usually serve the dip with crackers, but I wanted a low-carb option that felt just as fancy. These blinis were exactly what I needed. They’ve been a hit at every party since I may have developed a slight habit of hoarding them when no one’s looking (don’t judge me, they’re that good!).
Interestingly, before moving to Washington in 2006, I wasn’t a fan of salmon at all. It’s funny to think about, considering I can’t get enough of it now! With Kevin's upcoming boat purchase (he’s been dreaming of this for years), we’ll be stocked with fresh fish all year round—so expect to see more salmon recipes coming your way!
Whether you’re hosting a game day, holiday dinner, or a casual get-together, these Keto Blinis with Smoked Salmon Pâté are sure to steal the show. They’re quick, easy to make, and packed with flavor—ideal for impressing your guests and satisfying any low-carb cravings.
So here’s to a new year filled with more gatherings, more good food, and more delicious keto-friendly dishes like these smoked salmon blinis. May your celebrations be just as tasty as they are memorable!

🥘Keto Blinis with Smoked Salmon Pâté Ingredient Notes
Here, I explain the best ingredients for my Keto Blinis with Smoked Salmon Pâté recipe, what each one does, and substitution options. For the exact measurements, see the recipe card below.
Smoked Salmon Pâté:
- Sour Cream: Adds a rich, tangy flavor and creamy texture to the pâté. It also helps balance the saltiness of the smoked salmon.
Substitution: Greek yogurt can be used for a slightly lighter version with a similar tang. - Cream Cheese: Provides a smooth, creamy base and contributes to the luscious, spreadable texture of the pâté.
Substitution: Full-fat ricotta cheese or goat cheese can be used for a slightly different flavor and texture. - Capers: These little salty bites add a tangy, briny flavor to the pâté, making it extra savory.
Substitution: Finely chopped green olives can provide a similar briny punch if you don't like capers. - Red Onion: Adds a mild onion flavor and a bit of crunch.
Substitution: Shallots or scallions can work as a milder, more delicate onion alternative. - Lemon Juice: Adds a fresh citrus note that brightens up the pâté and balances out the richness.
Substitution: Lime juice can be used as an alternative for a different citrus flavor. - Smoked Salmon: The star ingredient! It gives the pâté its signature smoky flavor and delicate texture.
Substitution: If you don’t have smoked salmon, you can use regular cooked salmon for a less smoky, milder flavor. - Fresh Dill: Adds a touch of fresh, herby brightness that pairs wonderfully with salmon.
Substitution: Fresh tarragon or parsley can be used as a substitute for a slightly different herbal flavor.
Blinis:
- Wholesome Yum Superfine Almond Flour: This low-carb, gluten-free flour gives the blinis their light, fluffy texture while keeping them keto-friendly.
Substitution: You can use a different brand of superfine almond flour, but I don't know if that will change the texture. - Baking Powder: Helps the blinis rise and become light and fluffy.
- Eggs: Provide structure, moisture, and richness to the blinis.
Substitution: For a vegan version, flax eggs (1 tbsp ground flaxseed mixed with 3 tbsp water) can be used. - Unsweetened Almond Milk: Adds moisture to the batter without adding carbs.
Substitution: Any unsweetened plant-based milk or heavy cream can be used. - Unsalted Butter: Adds richness and helps create the perfect crisp texture when cooking the blinis.
Substitution: Coconut oil or ghee can be used as a dairy-free alternative. - Olive Oil: Used to grease the pan and ensure the blinis don’t stick.
Substitution: Avocado oil or any mild-flavored oil can also be used.

🔪How to Make Keto Blinis with Smoked Salmon Pâté
I have included a few step-by-step photos to help you visualize the recipe. The recipe card below provides the full instructions, including amounts and temperatures.
In a small bowl, combine the sour cream and cream cheese, and then stir in the capers, onion, dill, and lemon juice.
Add the smoked salmon and fold into the cream cheese mixture.
Carefully fold the egg whites into the batter just until combined. Don’t overbeat, as this will cause the blinis to flatten.
Spoon a heaping teaspoonful of batter per blini into the pan and cook until golden. Flip and repeat on the other side.
Storage and Reheating
Storage Instructions:
- For Leftovers (Smoked Salmon Pâté):
- Transfer the leftover smoked salmon pâté to an airtight container and store it in the fridge for up to 3-4 days.
- You can also freeze the pâté for up to 1 month. Just ensure it is tightly sealed in a freezer-safe container or bag to avoid freezer burn. When ready to eat, let it thaw in the fridge overnight.
- For Leftovers (Blinis):
- Store the cooked blinis in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To avoid sogginess, separate layers of blinis with parchment paper or paper towels.
- You can also freeze the blinis for up to 1 month. Place them in a freezer-safe bag or container, and when ready to eat, reheat them in a pan or oven to restore their crispy texture.
Reheating Instructions:
- Blinis:
- From the refrigerator: To reheat, place the blinis in a non-stick pan over medium heat with a little olive oil. Heat for about 1-2 minutes per side until warm and crispy.
- From frozen: To reheat frozen blinis, you can either bake them in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 10-12 minutes or heat them in a pan over low-medium heat until warm and crispy.
- Smoked Salmon Pâté:
- Room temperature: You can serve the pâté at room temperature or refrigerate it and let it sit out for about 20-30 minutes before serving.
- Cold: If you prefer it cold, no reheating is necessary. Just serve it chilled from the fridge.
Serving Tips:
- Blinis are best served fresh, but if storing leftovers, make sure to keep them crispy by reheating before serving. You can enjoy them as a delicious snack, appetizer, or topping for soups or salads!
💭My Recipe Tips
Whisk the Egg Whites Gently:
When making the blini batter, whisk the egg whites until they’re light and fluffy but not overbeaten. Overheating can cause the blinis to be flat rather than airy. Gently fold the whipped egg whites into the batter to keep that fluffiness intact.
Use a Non-Stick Pan:
For perfect, golden blinis without sticking, use a non-stick pan and only a small amount of oil. Too much oil can make the blinis greasy instead of crisp.
Keep the Heat Low:
Cooking blinis over medium-low heat ensures that they cook evenly on both sides. If the heat is too high, they may burn on the outside while staying raw inside.
Don't Overcrowd the Pan:
When cooking the blinis, don’t overcrowd the pan. Cook them in small batches (about 3-4 at a time) to ensure they cook evenly and don’t stick together.
Make Ahead:
The smoked salmon pâté can be prepared ahead of time and stored in the fridge for up to 3 days. This can save you time on the day you serve it!
Use Fresh Dill:
For garnish, fresh dill adds flavor and color, making these blinis stand out. It pairs perfectly with the smoked salmon and enhances the overall taste.
Customize the Pâté:
Feel free to adjust the pâté ingredients to your liking. If you love a little extra zest, you can add more lemon juice or even some hot sauce for a bit of spice.
Alternative Toppings:
If you’re not a fan of smoked salmon, try using cooked shrimp, crab meat, or even a slice of avocado for a different topping on the blinis. You can also play with flavored pâtés to create a unique variation!
FAQ about Keto Blinis with Smoked Salmon Pâté
To achieve extra-crispy blinis, cook them on medium-low heat and give them a little extra time in the pan until they are golden brown and crispy.
Yes! If you don't like capers or don't have any, you can substitute them with diced pickles or chopped olives or simply omit them. The pâté will still be flavorful with the smoked salmon and cream cheese base, but the capers add a lovely briny tang.
Store any leftover smoked salmon pâté in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. You can also freeze the pâté for up to 1 month. To thaw, simply place it in the fridge for several hours before serving.
