Creamy Keto Eggnog: A Sugar-Free & Dairy-Free Holiday Treat
Y'all, I've been low carb for quite some time now, but I'm still learning new things every day. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned? Never think anything is off-limits.
Take eggnog, for example. When I started my low-carb journey, I just assumed that my favorite holiday drink was permanently off the menu. That fear grew when I decided to limit dairy in my diet, too. I thought, “If I can’t have sugar and I’m cutting back on dairy, how could I ever enjoy eggnog again?”
Well, as it turns out, I was wrong! Eggnog doesn't have to be off-limits. I did some research, tried out a few recipes, and finally found a version from All Day I Dream About Food that became my go-to. After tweaking it a little to fit our needs, I’m excited to share this keto, sugar-free, and dairy-free eggnog recipe with you!
Is eggnog as nostalgic for you as it is for me? I can’t think of Christmas without eggnog, and the memories go back as far as I can remember! I remember being really little, enjoying homemade eggnog at my Grandma and Grandpa’s house, sitting by the fire. Those are some of my favorite holiday memories.
And let’s not forget the store-bought stuff my mom would bring home. You know, the thick, sugary eggnog that glugged out of the carton? I don’t even want to think about how much sugar was in that!
As I got older, adult eggnog came into play, and a lot of that was consumed, too (oops). But of course, I had to give up that version as well due to the added sugar. I know, I’m no fun, right? But no worries, you’re more than welcome to indulge. This keto version is ready for your favorite adult beverage—brandy, rum, or whiskey—add away!
This recipe allows me to enjoy a festive, guilt-free version of eggnog, and I’m thrilled to share it with you.
Why Dairy-Free?
Some of you may be wondering why I went dairy-free with this recipe. Well, it’s not just about limiting sugar; many of you have asked for more dairy-free options, and I’ve also been advised by my doctors to reduce my dairy intake due to chronic health issues. But don’t worry—this recipe is flexible! If dairy isn’t a concern for you, feel free to swap out the dairy-free ingredients for heavy cream, and if you want to sweeten it the traditional way, just use regular sugar instead of the low-carb sweetener. My goal is to make this recipe accessible to everyone so you can enjoy it however it fits your lifestyle!
Whether you're serving it at your holiday party or sipping it solo, this Keto Eggnog will be your new go-to for a festive, guilt-free treat. And trust me, it’s just as delicious as the sugary, dairy-filled version you grew up with. So, grab your favorite mug, curl up with a blanket, and enjoy this creamy holiday drink that's perfect for any low-carb or keto enthusiast. Cheers to the season—no sugar, no dairy, all the flavor!

🥘Keto Eggnog Ingredient Notes
Here, I explain the best ingredients for my Keto Eggnog recipe, what each one does, and substitution options. For the exact measurements, see the recipe card below.
- Eggs: The eggs are essential for creating the creamy, rich texture of the eggnog. They help thicken the mixture and provide the signature velvety consistency.
- Substitution: If you prefer, you can use pasteurized egg products for extra safety, but traditional whole eggs work best for flavor and texture.
- Egg Yolk: The egg yolk adds a silky, smooth texture and enhances the overall richness of the eggnog. It also helps thicken the mixture as it cooks.
- Substitution: If you prefer to avoid egg yolk, you can increase the amount of egg whites, but the texture may be a bit lighter and less rich.
- Besti Monk Fruit and Allulose Sweetener: This monk fruit and allulose blend provides the perfect sweetness level without any added sugar or carbs. It closely mimics the taste of sugar, making it ideal for keto-friendly recipes.
- Substitution: You can use other keto-friendly sweeteners like erythritol or stevia, but you may need to adjust the quantities to taste since they vary in sweetness.
- Pink Salt: A pinch of salt helps balance the sweetness and brings out the flavors in the eggnog, making the taste more rounded.
- Substitution: Regular sea salt can be used in place of pink salt without affecting the flavor.
- Unsweetened Coconut Milk: This creamy milk alternative is dairy-free and adds a subtle coconut flavor to the eggnog. It’s perfect for creating a rich, smooth base.
- Substitution: If you prefer a different flavor, you can swap coconut milk for almond milk or heavy cream, but the consistency may change slightly.
- Vanilla Extract: Vanilla adds warmth and depth to the flavor of the eggnog. It enhances the sweetness and gives it that familiar holiday taste.
- Substitution: If you’re out of vanilla extract, you can use a vanilla bean or a dash of vanilla powder for a similar flavor.
- Fresh Ground Nutmeg: Nutmeg is the classic spice used in eggnog. It adds a warm, slightly sweet, and spicy flavor that’s essential to the holiday drink.
- Substitution: Ground cinnamon can be used if you prefer a different flavor profile, but it won’t have the same signature nutmeg taste.
- Coconut Whipping Cream: This dairy-free alternative to regular whipped cream is light, fluffy, and perfectly complements the eggnog.
- Substitution: If you’re not dairy-free, you can use regular heavy whipping cream for a richer taste.
- Powdered Sweetener (Besti Monk Fruit and Allulose): Used to sweeten the whipped cream without adding carbs or sugar, it helps create that perfect topping for your eggnog.
- Substitution: You can use powdered erythritol or any sweetener you prefer for the whipped cream.

🔪How to Make Keto Eggnog
I have included a few step-by-step photos to help you visualize the recipe. The recipe card below provides the full instructions, including amounts and temperatures.
Whisk eggs, yolks, Swerve, and salt together in a medium saucepan.
Slowly whisk in the coconut milk until well combined.

Using a candy thermometer, cook the mixture over low heat, whisking vigorously and constantly until it thickens enough to coat the back of a spoon.
Storage Instruction for Keto Eggnog
To keep your Keto Eggnog tasting fresh and delicious, follow these simple storage tips:
- Refrigerate Immediately: After making the eggnog, transfer it to an airtight container and refrigerate immediately. It will stay fresh in the fridge for up to 3 to 4 days.
- Chill Before Serving: For best results, let the eggnog chill for at least 3 to 4 hours before serving. This helps the flavors meld together, and the consistency will thicken slightly as it cools.
- Store Whipped Cream Separately: If you have leftover whipped cream, store it separately in an airtight container in the fridge. It will last for about 2 days. Before serving, give it a quick whip to restore the fluffiness.
- Avoid Freezing: While the eggnog can be stored in the fridge for several days, do not freeze it. Freezing can cause the texture to break down, and the eggnog will lose its creamy consistency when thawed.
- Give It a Stir: Before serving leftovers, give the eggnog a quick stir to reincorporate any separation that may occur in the fridge.
By following these storage tips, your homemade Keto Eggnog will stay flavorful and creamy, ready to enjoy whenever the holiday spirit strikes!
💭My Recipe Tips
1. Whisk Constantly: When cooking the eggnog mixture, be sure to whisk vigorously and constantly. This is crucial to prevent the eggs from curdling, which can happen if the mixture gets too hot too quickly. Keep the heat low and be patient – the process may take up to 15 minutes.
2. Use a Candy Thermometer: To get the perfect texture, make sure to use a candy thermometer. This will help you reach the ideal temperature of 160°F, which is key for thickening the eggnog without scrambling the eggs.
3. Customize Your Sweetener: If you prefer a sweeter eggnog, feel free to adjust the Besti Monk Fruit and Allulose Sweetener to your taste. Add more if you like it sweeter or less if you prefer a lighter touch.
4. Make It Dairy-Free: This recipe is already dairy-free, but if you want to try other plant-based milk, you can substitute the unsweetened coconut milk with almond milk, cashew milk, or even hemp milk. Just be sure to choose an unsweetened version to keep it low-carb.
5. Chill for the Best Flavor: After cooking, let the eggnog chill for at least 3 to 4 hours in the fridge before serving. The flavors will deepen and meld together for an even more delicious drink.
6. Add Alcohol (Optional): If you like to make your eggnog a little more festive, feel free to add a splash of rum, whiskey, or brandy to each glass. Just stir it in after you’ve poured the eggnog into your serving glasses, and top with the whipped cream.
7. Get Creative with Spices: While nutmeg is classic, you can add a pinch of cinnamon, cloves, or ginger to the eggnog for a warm, spiced twist.
These tips will help you perfect your Keto Eggnog every time, making it a holiday drink your friends and family will love!
FAQ about Keto Eggnog
Definitely! If you’re not following a dairy-free diet, feel free to substitute the unsweetened coconut milk with heavy cream for a creamier, richer eggnog. Just keep in mind this will slightly alter the carb count, so adjust your macros accordingly.
Yes! This recipe is perfect for adding a little festive spirit. After pouring the chilled eggnog into glasses, stir in a splash of rum, whiskey, or brandy to make it an adult-only treat. Just be sure to add the alcohol right before serving so you don’t alter the eggnog’s texture during the cooling process.
We don’t recommend freezing eggnog because it may change the texture once thawed. The creamy consistency could separate, especially with the coconut milk and whipped cream. Make it fresh and enjoy it within a few days for the best results!
