🥘Keto New England Clam Chowder Ingredients

These are the ingredients necessary to make Keto New England Clam Chowder.

Overhead view of all of the ingredients needed to make keto New England clam chowder on a white counter.
    • Canned Clams - I love the Bar Harbor clams for this recipe, but you can use your favorite brand.
    • Clam Juice - I usually use Bar Harbor or Snows.
    • Turnips - I find turnips give this chowder the best flavor and texture, you will never guess they aren't potato!

A detailed list with measurements and instructions can be found on the printable recipe card at the bottom of the page.

🔪Keto New England Clam Chowder Instructions

This is a basic breakdown of the steps involved in making Keto New England Clam Chowder. You will find the full directions in the recipe card at the bottom of the post.

Stir in the clams with the juice from the cans and heat through.

Helpful Hint: 💡: For a creamier texture, try pureeing a portion of the cooked turnips and veggies before adding the clams. This step adds thickness and body to the chowder while keeping it keto-friendly and satisfyingly rich. Adjust the amount of puree to your preference for consistency.

    SUBSTITUTIONS

    • Canned Clams - Swap chopped fresh clams and their liquor when you can get them.
    • Clam Juice - If you can't find clam juice try using seafood stock or vegetable stock.
    • Turnips - If you can't find turnips you can substitute rutabaga, celery root, or even cauliflower.

    🍽Equipment

This is the equipment you will need to make Keto New England Clam Chowder.

    • Dutch oven
    • measuring cups and spoons
    • wooden spoon

    Storage

    1. Refrigeration: Allow the Keto New England Clam Chowder to cool completely before transferring it to an airtight container. Refrigerate within 2 hours of cooking. Properly stored, it will keep in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days.
    2. Freezing: If you plan to freeze portions for later enjoyment, first ensure the chowder is cooled to room temperature. Ladle individual servings into freezer-safe containers, leaving some space for expansion. Alternatively, use freezer bags for easier storage. Seal tightly and label with the date. Frozen Keto New England Clam Chowder will maintain quality for up to 2-3 months in the freezer.
    3. Reheating: When ready to enjoy, thaw frozen chowder overnight in the refrigerator or defrost it in the microwave on a low setting. Reheat gently on the stovetop over low to medium heat, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking. Avoid boiling to maintain the creamy texture. Adjust seasoning as needed and serve piping hot.

    💭Top tip

To enhance the smoky flavor of this Keto New England Clam Chowder, consider using smoked sea salt as a finishing touch. Just a sprinkle adds a subtle smokiness that complements the savory bacon and briny clams beautifully

FAQ about Keto New England Clam Chowder

Can I use other vegetables in this chowder?

Absolutely! While turnips offer a low-carb alternative to potatoes, you can experiment with other keto-friendly veggies like rutabaga or cauliflower for a similar texture.

    Is the xanthan gum necessary?

Xanthan gum acts as a thickener and helps achieve the desired consistency without the need for high-carb ingredients. However, if you prefer a thinner chowder, feel free to omit it or adjust the amount according to your preference.

How do I prevent the chowder from curdling when reheating?

To avoid curdling, reheat the chowder gently over low to medium heat, stirring frequently. Avoid boiling, as high temperatures can cause the cream to separate. Adding a splash of cold heavy cream while reheating can also help stabilize the mixture.
