What makes this Alabama White BBQ Sauce so special? 🥄Alabama White BBQ Sauce Ingredient Notes
Here, I explain the best ingredients for my Alabama White BBQ Sauce recipe, what each one does, and substitution options. For the exact measurements, see the recipe card below.

- Mayo: The creamy base that makes this sauce so luxurious. Use a high-quality, full-fat mayo for the best results. Substitution: For dairy-free, choose a dairy-free mayo.
- Apple Cider Vinegar: Brings that signature tangy zip and helps thin the sauce to the perfect consistency. Substitution: White vinegar works in a pinch, but ACV adds more depth and a subtle sweetness.
- Mustard Powder: Adds a sharp, pungent kick that's essential to authentic Alabama White BBQ Sauce. Substitution: Prepared Dijon mustard can work (use 4-5 tbsp) but will change the texture slightly.
- Worcestershire Sauce: Brings umami depth and complexity. Substitution: Vegetable umami sauce for a vegetarian version or coconut aminos for gluten-free needs.
- Monk Fruit and Allulose Sweetener: Balances the tang without adding carbs. Substitution: Any low-carb sweetener works, but powdered versions blend better. Adjust the amount to taste.
- Garlic & Onion Powder: Creates that savory foundation without chunks. Substitution: Fresh minced versions work but will change the texture and shelf life.
- Pink Salt: More minerals than regular salt, plus it helps preserve the sauce. Substitution: Regular sea salt works but does not contain the minerals that pink salt does.
- Cracked Black Pepper: Essential for that signature Alabama White BBQ Sauce kick. The more coarsely ground, the better! Substitution: No real substitute - this is key to authentic flavor.

📦Storing Your Alabama White BBQ Sauce
Storage Instructions:
- Refrigerator Storage:
- Keeps fresh for up to 2 weeks when properly stored
- Always use a clean, airtight container
- Store in a glass jar or plastic container with a tight seal
- Keep it in the main body of the fridge, not the door
Pro Tips for Best Results:
- Before Storing:
- Let sauce come to room temperature before sealing
- Whisk well before transferring to a storage container
- Leave a small amount of headspace in the container
- Clean the rim of the container before sealing
- During Storage:
- Always use clean utensils when serving
- Give it a good stir before each use
- If the sauce thickens, thin it with a splash of apple cider vinegar
- Trust your nose - if it smells off, don't use it

💭My Recipe Tips
1. Mayo Matters: Start with room temperature mayonnaise - it blends more smoothly and helps all the flavors marry together better. Trust me, this little step makes a difference!
2. Taste & Adjust: Y'all, everyone's taste buds are different! Start with the recipe measurements, then adjust to your liking. Want it tangier? Add more vinegar. Spicier? Crank up that black pepper!
3. Mix it Right: While a whisk is perfect for this sauce, don't go crazy with it. Mix just until everything is well combined - overmixing can make the sauce too thin. Think gentle folding, not arm workout!
4. Rest Time: Let your sauce chill in the fridge for at least an hour before serving if you can resist! The flavors need a little time to get friendly with each other - like a good Southern gathering, the longer they mingle, the better it gets.
5. Storage Smarts: Always use a clean jar or container, and resist the urge to dip directly into your storage container. Pour out what you need instead - this keeps your sauce fresh longer.
6. Temperature Tips: Never leave the sauce sitting out at room temperature for more than 2 hours. When serving at outdoor events, keep it in a bowl nested in ice.
7. Consistency Control: If your sauce gets too thick in the fridge, don't panic! Just whisk in a tiny splash of apple cider vinegar until it reaches your desired consistency. Start with a teaspoon - you can always add more!
8. Pro Move: Make a double batch right from the start - this sauce is like potato chips; once you start, you can't stop! Plus, it makes an amazing gift for your BBQ-loving friends (if you're feeling generous enough to share! 😉)
FAQ about Alabama White BBQ Sauce
When stored in an airtight container, this sauce stays fresh for up to 2 weeks in the refrigerator. But y'all, I've never had it last that long - it's just too good!
Oh honey, the possibilities are endless! It's traditionally used on grilled chicken, but I love it on pulled pork, as a dip for veggies, drizzled over salads, or spread on sandwiches. It even makes an amazing coleslaw dressing!
You sure can! Add more black pepper, a dash of cayenne, or even a splash of hot sauce. Start small - you can always add more heat, but you can't take it away!
🍽️Serving Suggestions
Classic Southern Style: Fire up that grill for some chicken - whether you're doing whole pieces, wings, or tenders, this sauce will make them sing! Serve with Dill Pickle Coleslaw or Keto KFC Coleslaw and some Deviled Egg Cauliflower Salad for that perfect BBQ plate. For a low-carb feast, wrap your sauced chicken in lettuce leaves with sliced tomatoes and avocado.
Party Perfect: Set up a wing bar with this Alabama White BBQ Sauce as your secret weapon! Offer both traditional buffalo wings and some grilled ones with this white sauce. Add a veggie platter, and watch your guests go crazy trying to decide which sauce they love more. Pro tip: put out extra sauce for dipping those veggies!
Weeknight Wonder: Transform your basic chicken or turkey sandwich into something special by spreading this sauce instead of mayo. Add some crispy lettuce, ripe tomatoes, and, if you're feeling fancy, some crumbled bacon. Serve with a pickle spear and some raw veggies on the side for the perfect lunch or quick dinner.

This sounds interesting. I've never tried a white BBQ sauce. Do you use it the same as you would a typical BBQ sauce or is it more of a condiment to be used on top of things after they are cooked?
Liz That Skinny Chick Can Bake
A fellow blogger once gave me a jar, but I never used it. I need to try your homemade recipe---it sure looks like a yummy alternative for BBQ. P.S. SO glad you enjoyed the pound cake (I gave as much away as I could so I wouldn't eat it all!!!).
Bobbi | Bobbi's Kozy Kitchen
I use it the same, and then use a little bit more as I serve it.
Bobbi | Bobbi's Kozy Kitchen
I like it because it is super tangy from the AV and Greek yogurt, and the mustard powder and black pepper give it a little bit of h eat. I love heat in my BBQ sauce 🙂 Ohhh I am trying SO hard not to eat that whole dang cake myself LOL My kids were here when I first made it and they got to eat the bottom piece I cut off to make it flat. It was still warm YUM!!

This looks like a great recipe! I'm pinning this one! 🙂

Awesome! We just had this the other night 🙂

What is the consistency supposed to be. I followed the directions and mine is quite thin.
Bobbi | Bobbi's Kozy Kitchen
I have had the consistency be a bit different depending on what brand of yogurt I use, but it isn't as thick as a traditional BBQ sauce.

White BBQ sauce is one of my favorite things to make in the summer because it goes so well on so many things we grill. Your recipe looks fantastic!

Bobbi - I don't see yogurt in the recipe?!
Bobbi
Nope, just mayo.

Lemon curd drew me in, then Pacific Northwest and then White BBQ sauce. My kind of cooking! Thank you for your time and energy!

Use teaspoons instead of tablespoons for the Mustard Powder. This absolutely has to be a typo
bobbiskozykitchen
No, it is not a typo. 3 tbsp of mustard powder in 1 cup of mayo gives it a creamy spicy tang. Otherwise it would taste like mayo with a slight mustard flavor. You are more than welcome to add as much or as little of the mustard powder as you like and make this recipe perfect for you and your family.
